Comic-Con 2008

Here’ s a quick summary of my Comic-con experience this year:

It’s been a few years since we put in the effort to get to Comic-Con, it seems like the San Diego convention center is really bulging at the seams nowadays trying to support the event.   All tickets were sold out, so that means that everybody was pre-registered, so the pre-reg line was something like 2 miles long (Michael did the calculations).  Preview night, which we hadn’t been to before was ever so slightly less dense with people.  We were able to get to Penny Arcade and PVP and various other mandatory booths pretty quickly so it helped free up time for the rest of the week.

Thursday morning we hit the freebies booths for quite a while and acquired lots of cool schwag like Wargames hats and Star Trek posters.  We ran an aisle by aisle inspection of the vendor floor and got pretty far until it was time to jump into line for the evening events.  This was when we started to line up for the Star Wars fan film awards.  The guy behind us was super excited to be early in the line because the first 300 line standers got Fanboys tickets.  Which in hindsight we probably should have taken when given the option, but we didnt know what it was at the time.  It turns out that Fanboys is the film that has been brewing for a few years about starwars fans sneaking into Lucas Ranch.  The guy behind us was so excited when he got his ticket that he was interviewed by a documentary film crew.  We sat through the fan film awards, they introduced Fanboys and it’s producer Kevin Spacey to talk about the film, then showed a bunch of the fan films which ranged from kinda funny to amazing.  Then we positioned ourselves better for the screening of Lost Boys The Tribe.  After the screening of Lost Boysb the Corys and most of the cast came out on stage.  The Corys were in character which I think was a surprise to the moderator.

Friday we came across the Watchmen line in the morning which had already wrapped around the building.  We decided instead to maybe jump into the back of the hall after it had

filled later, and spend the morning in the main hall.  We tried to get into the Hobbit fan panel, but it was in a small room and was already full, so about an hour before Watchmen started we checked the line, and they had stopped taking people in line because there was no way there were any more seats left in the 7000 seat room, woah.  So instead we got in line for the Joss Wheadon panel, in which they mostly talked about Dr. Horrible and had the cast there to answer questions, it was hilarious.  We then sat in on a Vertigo panel to get a good spot for the Penny Arcade panel which was also hilarious.

Then Saturday we caught the end of Iron Man animated to get good seats for Quick Draw, which was amazing as always.  Then ran over to check out Dollhouse, Wheadon’s new TV series where they had some of the cast on hand.  This is when my Comic-Con-cold started kicking in.  We browsed the main hall and grabbed some food, then got in line for the world premiere of Mutant Chronicles, which has a steampunky feel to it, and they used lots of detailed miniatures for special effects.

Sunday we went to breakfast with Sarah’s parents and spent the rest of the day  browsing the main hall for anything we missed.  Somehow we still managed to miss the XKCD booth!

At one point the Mythbusters walked right by us going to a signing, and so did Seth Green.  As usual it’s really going to take the rest of the week for us to recover health wise and excitement wise.

If there are any buhzllionaires following this webpage that need a place to spend their money, please go ahead and buy me one of these, in black preferably.  What the heck, pick one up for yourself while you’re at it:

Kill Bill in high def, sweet. I’m a sucker for anything that lets me flex the power and test the limits of our home theater.

Comcast Upgrade

June 13th, 2008

Comcast said it has increased the upload speed on our intarweb for FreeTM, so maybe that will translate into a speedier bforsse.org. I don’t know if the general public will be able to handle this much amazing content at such a high line rate. I haven’t tested it yet, I’ll let you know.

Completely unexpected…
